Four mechanism keep CO₂ stored permanently

A natural seal

A dense, impermeable caprock acts as a lid, preventing CO₂ from migrating upward.

Trapped in tiny spaces

CO₂ becomes lodged in the microscopic pores of the rock, much like air bubbles trapped in a sponge.

Dissolved in salty water

The CO₂ gradually mixes with saline water underground, making it more stable and immobile.

Turned to stone

Over long timescales, CO₂ reacts with minerals in the rock and becomes solid carbonate — locked away as part of the Earth’s geology.
